The Sugar Land Garden Club strives to provide a diverse slate of speakers addressing many different aspects of horticulture and plant propagation.  Monthly meetings are held at the Sugar Land Community Center, 226 Matlage Way, Sugar Land, starting with refreshments at 9:30am and the featured speaker at 10am.

"“The Quiet Invasion: Invasive Plants of the Houston-Galveston Region” by Lisa Gonzalez, research scientist with the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC)

Lisa's research focuses on the health and productivity of the Galveston Bay Ecosystem. She authored a web-based field guide (http://www.galvbayinvasives.org/) to help local homeowners and gardening enthusiasts recognize invasive plants, understand these plants' impact on people and the environment, choose appropriate control methods, and choose native plant alternatives. The presentation is free and open to the public.

September 15th, 2009 - Heidi Sheesley - "Fall Gardening Treasures"


Heidi is owner of Treesearch Farms, a whole sale nursery that supplies most of the plants sold at local Master Gardener and large garden club plant sales. Heidi will be talking about plants that are well suited to our local climate and soils. All of the plants covered in the program will be available at the Sugar Land Garden Club's 11th Annual Garden Art and Plant Sale on September 19.

October 20th, 2009 - "Gardening Without a Flowerbed" by John Ferguson

John is owner of Nature’s Way Resources, a local composting and recycling company that specializes in high quality compost, mulch and soil mixes. He will discuss the different types of containers, plants appropriate for each type, avoidance of common pitfalls, and especially how to match the soil to the plant, the container and the growing conditions.

November 17th, 2009 - "Birds of the Bayou City" by Mary Anne Weber

Mary Anne is Education Director of Houston Audubon Society for the past 10 years and supervisor of Audubon's the Sims Bayou Urban Nature Center in SE Houston. Soaring over our city parks and nesting in our backyards are an amazing array of birds. Mary Anne will tell us why Houston is one of the best cities in the country to observe birds. January 19th, 2010 - "Bringing your Landscape into Focus" by Danny Lenderman

Danny is a co-owner of Enchanted Forest/Garden Nurseries and Enchanted Landscapes which provides professional landscape design and installation services including patios, pathways, water features, and lighting. . Danny, an arborist and expert on irrigation, will discuss planning or adding to existing flowerbeds, borders, considerations of shape and texture, and stunning flower combinations.

February 16th, 2010 - "Bonsai Gardening as a Way of Life" by Philip Drilling, bonsai and orchid specialist and the owner of Cabrera Nursery.

Philip has been a member of the Houston Bonsai Society for 10 years. He believes bonsais take patience and a long time to develop as do family, friendships, and business. Phillip will present tips on growing bonsais and discuss plants appropriate for use as bonsais in our area.

March 16th, 2010 - "Butterflies and Caterpillars in our Gardens" by Farrar Stockton

Farrar is President of the Butterfly Enthusiasts of Southeast Texas and is proud to be the world’s oldest intern at the Houston Museum of Natural Science Butterfly and Moth Connection. Farrar will discuss host plants for specific species of butterflies and will match the caterpillar with its butterfly.

 

April 20th, 2010- "Fresh from your Garden to Your Vase" by Dina Vincent

Dina will show how to turn flowers and foliage from our own garden into masterpieces inside our homes.
